Nob Bikers?

I recently got an email asking whether or not I could come up with a Nob Biker list aimed at essentially guaranteeing a victory in a single scenario, whilst also being strong in the others. After about 30 minutes of trials, and a few tweaks, I've managed to come up with the following;

HQ:

Ork Warboss - 140pts

  • Warbike

  • Cybork Body

  • Power Klaw

  • Boss Pole

Ork Warboss - 140pts

  • Warbike

  • Cybork Body

  • Power Klaw

  • Boss Pole

Troops:

Ork Nob Squad - 570pts

  • 7 Models

  • Waaagh Banner

  • Painboy

  • 7x Power Klaw

  • 7x Warbike

  • 7x Cybork Body

Ork Nob Squad - 645pts

  • 8 Models

  • Waaagh Banner

  • Painboy

  • 8x Power Klaw

  • 8x Warbike

  • 8x Cybork Body

The list is aimed at ensuring a victory in 'Annihilation' scenario's. The list only gives away 4 kill points in total, but has more than enough killing potential to get a solid few kill points under its belt, before it simply turbo boosts away and avoids the enemy.

Where does the list suffer? Ordnance. Anything sporting STR10 becomes an issue, as with STR8 weapons you can simply allocate the wounds onto the warboss to avoid losing a Nob Biker to instant death. The Waaagh banners are also crucial, ensuring that Nob bikers make the most of out their attacks, by hitting 3/4 attacks on average.

If anyone has any questions about an army list, or would like advice, please feel free to contact me at: levett01@gmail.com

The Great Devourer - The Build Up!

Well, its been an eventful few weeks. Namely, I've now managed to reach 70 victories in row!! I'm aiming for 100, but this may be a little bit ambitious depending on how the 'Great Devourer' tournament goes in March, which brings me onto the main reason for this post.

'The Great Devourer' is a young tournament, boasting a rough attendance of 500 gamers, spread throughout WHFB, WH40K and LoTR, this is the largest tournament of its kind held in the UK. The points limit for the WH40K side of things is 1750, hence my previous post questioning if this will become a more common sight across the tournament scene.

Moving on! I have some reservations about the tournament. After recently contacting the organisers, it seems they were not familiar with the 'GT House Rules' packs that are available, nor were they planning to enforce any official Errata documents. After a chat over the phone, they are now going to review the tournaments structure and consider some amendments. On a serious note, I do have some concerns about the tournament, and will most likely end up offering some form of assistance on the day.

So, thats covered now! Moving onto the main event... The list I am planning to take to the tournament is listed below. I've taken a great amount of time in working out how it will perform against different units, and various list types I am likely to find at 1750, and can safely say I feel confident in how it will perform. I'll be posting pictures up shortly documenting the armies progress as I embark on the painting side of things.... (yawn!! lol).

World Eaters 1750 List:

HQ:

Skraal (Count As: Kharn the Betrayer) – 165pts

Changes ahead?

Since 5th Edition we have seen a number of changes to the game we all love, Warhammer 40000.

5th Edition has taken aspects back from 2nd Edition, and merged them into the more developed 4th Edition, creating a rather balanced system. However, for a long time the standard tournament limit has been 1500pts in the European scene, and 1850pts across the pond in America. It now seems a change is coming, in that some tournaments such as "The Great Devourer" have adopted 1750pts, and due to this there has been a significant rise in games being played this points level.

The question I put forward here, is does 1750 offer a better gaming experience, with a more balanced outcome than 1500 or 1850? I can see the potential for longer, more tactical games at 1750, however I can also see this opening a window to creating more unbalanced army lists in the tournament scene.

Lets take a look at how one of the top tier army lists that may be affected.

Example: "Lash Spam"

HQ:

Daemon Prince w/ MoS, Wings, Lash of Submission

Daemon Prince w/ MoS, Wings, Lash of Submission

Troops:

10x Plague Marines, 2x Plasma Gun

10x Plague Marines, 2x Plasma Gun

2x Rhino w/ Combi Melta.

Heavy Support:

3x Obliterators

3x Obliterators

1x Vindicator

Total: 1495

Currently this list is solid. You have enough Anti-Tank to take care of any serious armoured threats, whilst also having plenty of anti-infantry power. Now, add in an extra 250 pts and you could potentially be looking at a further 10 plague marines with 2 melta guns, meaning you are now facing 30! The possibilities are endless...

So, what do we think? is 1750pts the saviour of tournament play in 5th Edition, or does 1500pts still 'float the boat'?

The Rebirth of the D6 Curse.

Its been a long time since I've posted here, however I feel its time to revive the only beauty and spread my thoughts across the abyss of the Internet.

Recently I have become heavily involved in increasing my painting ability and so far i'm happy with the results. I'm now able confidently say I am able to pull off the following techniques to a level I am happy with;

  • NMM
  • Oxidised Metals
  • Rust
  • Wet Blending
  • Chipped Armour
  • Progressive Glazing
  • OSL (Only on small sources, I've not tried a whole model yet

Since my last post I was due to go to the GT, unfortunately however I was being tested for cancer at the time so had to cancel! I have also now abandoned the Eldar project as it was simply not enthralling on any level what so ever.

In light of this I have now moved onto doing a World Eaters / Khorne army, which I am enjoying the most since I first started the WH40K hobby over 17 years ago. I'll be posting an update soon with an army list, and hopefully  some pictures of the models!

The GT approaches...

Hi All,

Long time for an update! Been massively busy with play testing different armies and generally working out which will be the most practical to take to this years GT. After much deliberation I have gone with Eldar! The gorgeous models allows for some truly brilliant freehand to be done, and as well know, mech eldar is one of the hardest lists to beat, even since the 5th Edition skimmer nerf.

I've been asked how I normally go about making my tournament lists, well i'm going to try and bullet some of the key points I go over each time, with the hope that it will help people in future!

  • Opponents armies. What do you expect to see? Your list must stand a good chance at dealing with Nidzilla, Horde MEqs, Green Tide and Tau Fish of Fury. A lot of the lists at GT's often revolve around these "Internet lists", with small modifications so that players can call it their own!
  • Playing Speed. How quick can you cover 18" with 2 units? 40k has always revolved around 18 inch "circles of influence", as it means most units cannot charge you in their following turn, and will only jsut be in rapid fire range.
  • Model Count. Like it or not, this DOES make a difference. If you come across any army aimed at producing a high volume of shots, and you are using a low model count army, you WILL die.
  • Psycological Influences. No-one at a GT will look at a Nidzilla army and go "aww, cute carnifex", everyone is intimidated by what they can do, same goes for Wraithlords. Sometimes it is worth putting large targets in your army, purely for the psycological aspect to aid in altering your opponents battle plan.

Taking the above into account, they form a good thought process when building any Warhammer 40000 army list, or at least, they haven't failed me yet!

In my next post, I will be posting the Eldar list I am aiming to take to GT Heat 2 this year, feel free to post any comments, or ask questions!

Commission - Tzeentch Terminator Lord

Just thought I'd post this quickly. The below was for a commission, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, although I would of preferred to have done some OSL around the rock from the lava.

One thing I did enjoy about this mini was definitely painting the blue, it had been a long time since I'd stepped into the realms of painting a blue orientated miniature, and i thoroughly enjoyed it!

Blood Guard Update: WIP Octavian Pictures

Well, Octavian is near completion. He still has a lot of detail work that needs finishing, along with the yellow areas being repainted red to match the armour.

I am also debating repositioning his head to face towards the shield.

Blood Guard Update: Final Army List!

Well, now that I've got firmly 'stuck' into the painting and modeling of the Blood Guard, I felt that it was important to finalize the army list I will be taking to the 2008 GT.

I have tried to keep 5th Edition in mind, but the main theme behind the army is that each aspect poses an equal threat, thus the intention is that my opponent will either spread his firepower too thin and try to take out each threat at the same time, or they will concentrate on one, leaving the rest of my army to work on the game objectives.

List below!

Blood Guard – Octavian’s Coven (1500pts)

HQ:

Lord Octavian – The Dragon. (Count as Mephiston) – 225pts

Chaplain – 100pts

Elites:

Death Company – 160pts

+ 7 Models (3 free)

+ Rhino

Blood Guard (VAS) - 215pts

+ 6 Models

+ 1x Flamer

+ 2x Power Weapon

+ 1x Meltabombs

+ Rhino

Troops:

Tactical Squad – 215pts

+ 10 Models

+ Plasma Gun

+ Missile Launcher

Tactical Squad – 170pts

+ 5 Models

+ 1x Meltagun

+ 1x Meltabombs

+ Rhino

Blood Familiars (Storm Troopers) – 65 pts

+ 5 Models

+ 1x Plasma Gun

+ 1x Flamer

Fast Attack:

Attack Bike – 50pts

+ Multi Melta

Attack Bike – 50pts

+ Multi Melta

Heavy Support:

Baal Predator – 125pts

+ HB Sponsons

Baal Predator – 125pts

+ HB Sponsons

Blood Guard Update: WIP Baal Predator Pictures

Ah... oh the joy of painting an entire army of fully shaded, 6 stage highlighted, NMM space marines. So far I've managed to complete 5 of the death company, including the unit "standard bearer". However, its now becoming a tad bit boring painting the same unit everyday, so I began work on the Baal Predator which can be seen below!

The goal behind the freehand was to get the appearance of "angelic" wings and name the tank 'Abel'. The second tank in the pair will sport some 'daemonic' wings and be called 'Kain'.

Unfortunately I've not even had chance to assemble the other Baal, and I dare not as I already have too much of the army part finished!

Blood Guard Update: WIP Death Company Pictures

A few pictures here of some of the progress that has been made on the Blood Guard. I've been working on the shields for my death company, as seen below. These will represent their 'Feel No Pain' ability. On another note, all of the armies metallic areas will be done in NMM.

I've decided on a symbol for my blood guard. Apologies for the quality of the picture, but i'm sure you can get the rough idea! Its a merge of the spartan symbol they had on their shields, mixed with the standard 'Blood Drop' from the Blood Angels insignia.

Finally, one more picture side on for those curious about the overall colour scheme. Unfortunately the below picture really doesnt show the shading thats been done on the red, or the battle damage... but thats what mobile phone cameras do i guess!

Blood Guard Fluff...

I've decided to put all of the history for my chapter into a handy 'tome', which my opponents will be able to read. The book itself will aim to contain the following information;

  • UK GT Army List
  • Blood Guard history
  • Pictures of Models
  • Custom Artwork
You can find the fluff below... it still needs work but here is what I have thus far.

THE BLOOD GUARD - WIP FLUFF

Introduction:

"How do you define a saviour? A servant of good, honour, and justice who rescues others from the grasp of evil? A courageous soul, bound to helping preserve the destiny of lesser beings? Or soul so dark, and tortured, that fear has no grasp upon it? A soul so dark, that chaos itself has come to fear it. For it is those cursed few who hold the key to our legions future."

- Lord Commander Dante addressing Mephiston during the Red Ascension.

Background:

The Blood Guard

Deeply ingrained within the Blood Angels' gene-seed is the encoded experience of Sanguinius, and many say that most deeply imprinted of all is the memory ops his final battle with Horus. Sometimes an event or circumstance will trigger this 'race memory'. This appears to happen only rarely, often on the eve of battle, and it is likely to be a fatal experience for the warrior whose mind is suddenly wrenched into the distant past. What has become known as the Black Rage overcomes him, the memories, of his consciousness of Sanguinius intrude upon his mind, and dire events ten thousand years old flood into the present. This we know to be true.

Should the warrior survive the memories of those dark events and the forth coming battle, he will be restrained and taken back to Baal, where he will be held within the 'Tower of Amareo'. Not much is known about the tower, other than it holds both, some of the most heroic and cursed warriors to bare the gene-seed of Sanguinius. There are tales of howling cries that demand the blood of the living, and call out the name of Sanguinius himself. There have been recorded incidents where the local Baalites have strayed close to the tower, to go missing one day, only to reappear later drained of their blood. Truly, these warriors were doomed to become shadows of their once heroic selves. This fate had been sealed until the arrival of the Lord of Death, Mephiston.

After overcoming the Black Rage a second time, Mephiston had begun to see the plan his primarch had laid out before him, the cure to their blood thirst was in those closest to Sanguinius, those tortured souls who had relived the final moments on Sanguinius' glorious life before it was extinguished at the hands of Horus. Not much is known about the months Mephiston spent within the Tower of Amareo, however it is said that during the final days the sky above the tower turned red with blood, this phenomenon became known as the Red Ascension.

Finally Mephiston emerged, and behind him an entire phalanx of astartes clad in Black and Red armour sporting weapons similar to the revered Spear of Telesto once wielded by Sanguinius himself. At the center of the formation stood an equal to the lord of death, Octavian - 'Lord of the Blood Guard'. Mephiston had managed to aid Octavian, once his most promising apprentice, to control the Black Rage, enhancing his powers to unimaginable levels.

The Blood Guard had been born. Each member of the blood guard was a forgotten hero, cursed with the red thirst and the memories of the fall of Sanguinius, each a surviving member of the Death Company, and each an incomparable warrior. The Blood Guard exists as a secretive detachment of the Blood Angels, tasked with finding a cure for the gene-seed curse they all possess, and they will not rest until their thirst is quenched for all eternity.

Power Lances

Created deep within the core of Baal, and bathed in the blood of their fallen brethren, each lance is work of art unto itself. After the initial creation process, the lance is then attuned to psychic signature of Sanguinius himself, using blood from the holiest of artefacts, the Red Grail, for only the sons of the sanguine one are able to wield the lances to full effect.

The weapon itself is designed to hunt down the foul stench of chaos and eradicate it. Upon contact with a tainted object, the lance will revolt, resonating with anger inside the very atomic structure of the target, causing a series of violent detonations at the sub-atomic level, leaving no trace of taint of chaos.

The Master of the Guard is anointed with a further modified lance, able to discharge a small sphere of raw energy at close range, similar to the effects of plasma weaponry, the power of which is largely dependent upon the wielder.

2008 Goals & UK GT Army decision - The Blood Guard

Well, the time we all look forward too is fast approaching, the tournament season! Over the summer there are numerous tournaments occurring throughout the UK, and my intention is to visit as many of them as possible, and hopefully win.

I have set myself two rather ambitious goals this year, these are;

  1. Win UK GT Best painted Army.
  2. Finish in the top 10 of my GT heat for gaming.
Whilst the second goal isn't quite as significant as the first, it is an obtainable goal that will motivate me to keep playing during the run up to the UK GT heats.

The army I have decided on taking to achieve both of the above goals are a "Blood Angels " successor chapter called the "Blood Guard". I always have been a huge fan of the vampire theme behind the Blood Angels history, and due to this I simple couldn't resist the opportunity to paint and model an entire army based upon this very concept.

Updates coming soon!

Commission Work

Its a fact of life, some of us simply do not enjoy the painting aspect of this hobby, whilst others find it enjoyable, but instead of ending up with a wonderfully painted space marine, find themselves staring at a model which resembles a two year olds vomit. We have all been there!

My name is John Levett. I have been painting games workshop miniatures for other people on a commission basis for approximately two years, and have enjoyed every second of it. I enjoy working with my clients to help them achieve the result they are after, whether it be for an individual model, an entire unit or even a full scale army. Over time, I have come to realize that if I am able to form a rapport with my clients, I end up getting just as involved in the project as them, which I like to think contributes towards the overall experience, from both the client and painters perspective.

The most common question asked, is what rates do I charge. Honestly, I cannot give any fixed examples of a pricing structure, as it entirely depends upon what the complexity of the task at hand. However, below you will find a rough guide to the various "levels of detail" I offer and what techniques will be used / available at each given level.

Level 1 (Gaming Standard):
  • Models will be fully based using any combination of modeling sand / flock. Clients choice!
  • Each model will be fully painted using minimum of 2 layers per colour.
  • Between 2-4 highlights will be used.
  • 1 shading wash.
Level 2 (Display Standard):
  • Models will be fully based using any combination of modeling sand / flock. Client also has the option of discussing more "advanced" scenic bases.
  • Model conversion options available.
  • Each model will be fully painted using a minimum of 4 layers per colour (where applicable)
  • Between 4-8 highlights will be used.
  • 3 shading washes.
  • Battle Damage / weathering effects available upon request.
  • NMM available upon request, else advanced true metallics will be used.
Level 3 (Competition Standard):
  • Each model is assessed on a case by case basis and will involve the full array of techniques I can capable of, along with extensive conversion & sculpting work where appropriate.

If any of the above seem appealing, or you would simply like to ask a question, please feel free to contact me. You will find my contact details below.
